Grain seed weight per bushel??

How much does a bushel of winter wheat, winter oats, and winter rye seed weigh? Trying to figure out seed quanities needed for pounds per acre seeding rates. thanks, Doug

The legal weight for oats here in Ohio is 34# with good cleaned seed oats hiting up to 40# per bu. that would have come off the combine at 32# with the cleanings making the difference, only way to know is a test weight scale.

What is winter oats, never heard of it?

Typically here in Minnesota we plant 3 bu an acre oats, 2 bu an acre wheat or rye, if that helps.

Around here we have winter oats (or oats) and spring oats. Winter oats are seeded in the fall (treat just like wheat or rye). They are a little more prone to winter kill here than the other small grains but are the preferred oat (yields 3:1 over spring, due to tillering)

Where would a person buy winter oats? (this isn;t a left hand monkey wrench thing is it?) Down here in the land of wimpy winters, (moved here from Michigan)wet wet springs would make planting in the fall a nice idea.

I get them at my local Southern States Co-op. Any of your local feed and seed stores should have them.

winter wheat is 60#, oats is 32#, I think rye is also 60# but not sure.

David now that you have all the numbers, be advised that around here no seed is sold by the bushel! Most comes in 50# bags, so how many bushels are there in 10 sacks of oats? It's never easy. My nickel Dick Davis
