Ford 542 Baler

I have had a lot of tying trouble with this baler, probably most of it my fault. I started reading the manual cover to cover and made all the adjustments and ran about 20 bales through it in the barn and it didnt miss a tie. When I was seeking help through the New Holland dealership they told me if a ford baler tied 75 out of 100 bales not to adjust anything. This sounds awfully poor to me. Can someone out there support this baler,or do ford balers have this bad a reputation?

OK First you have a bad case of color blindness to deal with and it sounds like you have figured out how to support your baler yourself. If my Ford baler didn't tie but 75% of the time, it would not be hooked to a tractor in my fields. That baler, unless there is something wrong with that specific baler, can be as reliable as the NH's and JD's of the same era and bale just as much hay. The three of them use the same basic knotter design and are very similar in settings and adjustments. As for support, there is a handfull of guys on this forum that have about done anything you could to these balers so let us know.

I have a 532 and my neighbor has the 542. When we bale together, it never fails that we start trying to go to fast and make heavier bales. As soon as we do , we break lots of bales. We have come to the conclusion that FORD balers just like to go at their own, slow pace. So you may have to slow down and let off some of the tension, and it will probably work OK. Good Luck!
