I bent the PTO shaft on my 5 foot KK bush hog. (don't ask how, it was dumb)The part I bent is the part that hooks onto the tractor and then slips onto the other part of the shaft thats connected to the bush hog. Any suggestions on how I can straighten this triangular piece of metal?

Agri Supply sells a Eurocardan for $64.49 to fit a 5 foot cutter. They sell KK so I would call them and see what a new setup would cost at 1-800-345-0169. No way I would risk that thing breaking for that few dollars...

My G-Uncle was an ol' time machinist. He had a way to straighhten shafts without heating them {even hydraulic cylinder rods}.

He would take two oak {or hardwood} 4X4's and lay them on the floor. Lay the shaft across {span} the two pieces of wood and position the bent area of the shaft so that the arch is up {a small notch in each of the 4X4's may help keep the shaft from rolling}.

Then wearing very heavy leather gloves {and eye and ear protection}, take an oak 2X4 {about 6' long or so} and whack the shaft on the hump!!! Keep checking the shaft as you continue to smack it. I have straightened many hydraulic cylinders and other sort of shafts this way, and there are no "dings or dimples" from hammer marks!

Works really well!

{Caution, there is a lot of vibration that will hurt your hands if you don't wear thick enough gloves!}

Since it has to slide under torq - toss it & buy new. 'Close' isn't good enough on this part.

The triangular shafts use very, very hard steel. If you heat it, it will very likey break adjacent to where it is heated. Less than $200 will get you a generic replacement shaft with the shields.

I have to agree with Tom, if you have ever seen a shaft break you'll just buy a new 1.

If you had ever seen a PTO shaft break and "get loose" while running, you would certainly purchase a new shaft. Very dangerous and a law suit in the making.

I agree. I had a universal come apart once. One end of the shaft shot WAY over the tractor (100ft?) and then landed next to it. The other end, still hooked to the pto beat the drawbar and three point arms on the tractor pretty good before i got the pto shut off.

The way to straighten it is to heat it up with an oxyacetylene torch. How straight you can get it is another matter. Depends on how bent it is, and where it's bent. If you're not comfortable giving it a try, bring it to a machine shop.
