Sharpen disc blades?

I've got a small 5' IH disc that I used with my Ford 8N. The disc really isn't cutting in that well... my question is can you/do you/are you supposed to sharpen the discs? Can I just take a grinder to them and sharpen them up? Should I make them knife sharp, or just sharpen them a little? Right now they have sort of a beveled edge.

Maybe a little more weight on there would help more? I was thinking of a drum or something that I could fill with water; that'd be easy to get on and off. Thanks, Bryan

if you have any rocks at all, the weight wants to jump off the discs - mount the weight on super-solid or you will spend most of your time putting it back together - can't be too strong

I used some railroad ties with lots of lag bolts -

Hi Peter, Yeah, I think that you are right. I don't have rocks, but this is a small rig and it bounces arounds a lot. I was just thinking about it, I was going to try something goofy; I have a 6' blade and I was going to try to set it on there and secure it somehow. I've got my eyes open for anything else that I could use; RR ties would be nice but the closest I could get at the moment is landscape timbers which aren't as big and I'd have to buy them.

Thanks you guys, I think that I'll focus on adding more weight instead of sharpening. I'm thinking some containers filled with water. Bryan

They used to have folks traveling around sharpening disks, but really it should stay sharp enough as is, and they wear down fast enough, no need to grind off more!

The delux way were the disk rollers, they would press a new edge on the disk, rolled each disk blade to put a new sharp edge on them.

On a 6' disk, the problem is weight, weight, weight. You need more weight.

Nope...ya don't sharpen them, they wear down fast enough anyway..!!

Put some weight on it if it doesent cut, and once you get it set as far as cutting angle, don't change the angle.. The cutting edge that naturally forms will wear in a new position, and shorten the life of the discs each time you reset it... Best setting is probably an Intermediate setting.
