Don't know if this will help, but in my manual it doesn't have an operational rpm for the engine. But did say that the bailer (engine speed) should be operated to produce 68 strokes per minute. Lookin through the parts book, The drive sproket on the PTO is 32 teeth. The Sproket on the flywheel is either 34 (standard) or 30 (low speed) teeth. Based on standard gears and a little assumptions If 540 pto speed produces 68 strokes, with standard gears (32 & 34), The flywheel RPM would be 574rpm. In low speed (32 & 30)it be 506rpm.

I see no reason direct drive wouldn't work. Given these fella's where operated with tractors that had their PTOs directly tied to the ground speed of said tractor and you may or may not be running a true 540. I would however not exceed the 540/68 strokes, makes for some eractic operation (doesn't tie worth a crap). Just turn the flywheel and count plunger strokes and see if 540 produces somehtin in the 68 strokes range (roughly 8 turns of flywheel should equal one stroke of plunger).

I don't know, but I have an original owner's manual for that baler if you're interested. I'd just look up the info and post it here right now, but the book is on my desk at work and I don't plan to get anywhere near that place until Monday. I am going to sell the manual eventually if you're interested.

Email me if you like. The address is "unhid". Or email me on Monday and I'll look up the info for you.
