I was thinking about planting wheat as a nurse crop for my brome this fall. (only 20 acres). My question is if I cut the wheat before it heads out next spring for the hay, how is that for horses and cattle?

A lot of Oklahoma cattlemen winter graze their wheat because the feed value is so good. It cuts down on the yield a bit but they say the gain on the cattle more than offsets the yield loss. Some will even forego harvesting the wheat for grain so they can graze it into the summer.

Makes an extremely high quality feed for cattle. Wheat is hard to cure for horses where it wont mold, especially that early unless you are in an arid area of the US. We grow a lot of wheat here for silage for dairy cows. Milk output is as high as on corn silage and the cows will leave average alfalfa for wheat. If you can make good wheat hay horses will like it too.

check the landscape straw mulch market in your area. May be worth more than good horse hay.

Should be OK, but plant a variety that doesn't have beards on it, so that if it does start to head before you can cut it, it won't bother the animals.
