found a JD14T hay baler at a local farmer's residence, hasn't been used since last season but looks in OK shape, still is greased up and needles, etc. look in good shape. question he wants $600 for it, is this a good price, what should I also look for, there is no hay down to bale but we have hooked it up to a tractor and ran it. Anything about this model baler I should be worried about. I don't need to buy on the year, just a good dependable older baler for my 20+ acres and possibly my neighbors.
thanks

we own two 14t balers and love em both. the first one was given to me and i paid 50 bucks for the second one. we put up about 4000 bails/year and with two we can move equipment around without having to put too much time on the road.
make sure it is timed by the book and dont allow any freeplay in any of the shear pins as this will cause the flywheel pin to shear often. john deere has an excellent parts supply and will ship directly to your farm. good luck

Word of caution on Deere parts. Our Deere dealer is tied in with a sister deere dealer that is also NH/Ford dealer. Went to him to find a part from a NH that is virtually identical to deere 14T part and He commented that he has a better time getting old NH parts than Old Deere parts.

What you say could be true today, but I've never had to wait longer than 3 days for Deere parts, and I've waited a week or more for NH parts.

The 14T was considered a very good baler for it's time. I was told by an older John Deere mechanic that after they baled a "gajillion" bales they get worn and have a tendency to bend needles and shear pins more easily. You also cannot time these balers by the book when this starts to happen. You should advance the plungerhead exactly one cog on the chain sprocket in the front of the baler, then reattach it. This will compensate for wear the baler might have over the years. This has proven to work great. Be careful when you disconnect the chain because the raker teeth can move on the downstroke. This works great and will bale just fine then. Hope this helps if you need it.

Take a few bales over and re-bale them, then you can see how well it ties ec't. If it looks good offer him $550.

as someone already said, re-bale some bales to see if it ties

make sure your tractor is well matched, in other words, one capable of slower ground speeds at 540 pto rpm

Second the motion. We had a 14T that several previous owners had given less than TLC. Somebody had ripped the front bale chamber angles off and had rewelded them. The knotter frame had been replaced.

We would put up 800 - 1000 bales a year with it, and as long as you didn't try to shove hay through it too fast, it worked fine. I sheared a lot of pins off the flywheel, but that was because I didn't know that you have to keep the knife sharp and aligned in any kind of baler.

Parts support was excellent. Deere is as good or better than anybody else for parts availability and pricing in older stuff, at least in my experience. Any Deere dealer should be able to sell you both a manual and parts book.

I have a 14-T and one thing you have to watch is the hub that comes out of the back of the slip clutch. The splines tend to strip out of the cast hub and you have to get a new one that costs $250. I just bought one. If the needles and knotters are adjusted right by the book mine seems to work great. You can get an owners manual from Deere if you need one. Good Luck!
