Properly adjusting 3 pt. hitch single plow

this is about as basic as it gets, but could you fellows explain the PROPER procedure for adjusting my single 16" 3 pt. hitch plow for maximum penetration and ease of pull. This plow is a Pittsburg make and has a handle that allows the moldboard to be shifted somewhat. What i need to know is: when hitching up, what is the right way to adjust the hitch arms initially and the top link. Then, where is the best place to set the plow adjustment handle?

Wolfy has it right for initial set up . The adjusting lever on the plow is to turn the plow to widen or narrow the width of cut. For a 16" bottom, the inside of the right rear tire should be 27 1/2" from the center of the tractor. When you are plowing , the plow should be level, front to back , adjusted with the top center link, and level side to side adjusted with the crank on the tractor lift arm. That lever on the plow gets its final adjustment after you start plowing. to adjust width of cut. DO NOT chain or fasten the plow in any manner to keep it from swinging side to side.

thanks men. looks like I have been on the right road...more or less, all along but I have always used the sway chains, thinking it kept the plow from going too far, one way or the other. i suppose the plow should just be left free to seek it's own 'center'.

Leave the sway chains on, I think he is talking about the rigid stabilizer bars altho we have used them with 2-12" Ford-Ferguson plows, taking the sway chaines off will let the plow swing into the tire and goodby tire if not bring the plow up over the seat

If this is the 1st time you've set-up the plow to this tractor, park tractor on level with left wheels up on 8in blocks. have plow sitting level right next to tractor hitch. now adjust hitch arms to meet plow, starting with left arm then right draft arm, then the top link. If it's a tricycle tractor, then left wheel & front wheels up on 8in blocks. You should be good to go with only the slightest tweaking necessary-if any.
