well i went back over to the auction yard and i could find no tags or anything on the green one ,but as i looked at the bars i could see some orange paint so i looked closer to the gear box and it looked like there was a case eagle on the gearbox casting.did case make there own rakes?

Yes. Friend of mine has one. 170 I think is the model? He paid $80 for it 5 years ago. Rakes fine. Bars had to be drilled to take universal rubber-mount teeth, as the original Case rubber mount-teeth had vertical studs on them, and he couldn't find replacements.

You would be very lucky to get the NH for less than $700 - probably double that, and very silly to pay more than $400 for any of the others, perhaps much less depending on details. A good JD rake gets close to a NH in value, but your description doesn't sound like a 'good' green model. ;)

Hard to beat the NH bar rakes, been around forever and as common as grass. there are better/worse choises. like the other fella said wheel rakes have pro's con's too. depends on what you want to do. Good flat ground they are ok. some folks love them some hate'm. I wouldn't recommend with rocky soils as they will pick up everygthing and mix rocks into the windrow. very bad for forage chopper knives. My grand-father-in-law has an old IH (60's?) 4 tire bar rake (not the NH "roll-a-bar" type as the bars are always straight) has held up for years and does a good job.. everyone used to make rakes. some tried hard at it some just tried to get something on the market if you could find out the brand of the "green" one someone may be able to tell you more (Oliver or JD??)... good luck...

The buying season has begun on hay rakes. I don't think you'll see a good modern five bar rake go for less than $500. I would be surprised to see the NH 258 go for less than $1,500. The wheel rakes usually don't command too high of prices.

Well in my opinion. I have had NH 256's and 258's and gehl 418 "pin wheel" rakes. And we have used some big rotary rakes. He has been my findings. The pin wheels are ok like the M&W you mentioned. But they dont make a tight wind row and the hay tends to bunch up under them. I personally hated the because mine was a trailered one that had 8 wheels and had no hydraulic down pressure so using it on the hills around he was miserable if not down right unbearable. It would ruin a good hay day. Alot of people around here bought them due to their cheep prices but any auction you go to around here will have atleast one pin wheel rake less than one year old going for a price that is half of new. 2) the rotary rakes are fun to use and you can rake a wide swath at a time, but anytime they break, you better have deep pockets cause there isnt anything cheep about them and the parts we have found were HARD to get. 3) My favorite are the 258's and 256's especially with a dolley wheel in the front. Im not sure you cant rake just as fast with one of these verses the rotary rakes. They are very low maintenance other than the ocassional tooth to replace. Cheep to fix and are easy to use with little horse power or you can rake with a 4 wheeler if needs be. My opinion would be the 258 is the best choice.

I've bought several New Holland rakes in the last year. (8 so far) I re-sell them, and use a couple of 'em. A good NH rake can fetch as much as $1400 around here. I buy any good, working rakes that sell under $500. The LEAST I've paid for one is $390. It re-sold at another cosignment sale, for $875. As spring comes on the scene, the prices go up. I have 3 (almost new) rakes still for sale. I won't cut loose of them for less than $1200 from now to the end of summer. John
