I recently bought a used Krause wheel disc. While using it for the first time, the nuts that hold the discs on the shaft came loose and eventually fell off. I bought two new nuts and am having trouble replacing them. The shaft spin when I try to put the new ons on. I assume I need grab hold of something with a pipe wrench, possibly the large square piece at the other end of the shaft. Is that corrrect? Any other suggestions to make this an easier job? This is my first time to do this. Thanks for the help.

In addition to the other suggestions; I assume the blades haven't spun on the axle???? You can take a two by (2 x 4/6) and wedge it between 2 or 3 blades and the frame..... ..

As indicated, holding the opposite end of the shaft will do the trick.

If you can get ahold of a 3/4" impact wrench like those used for truck tire removal, it will do the job in short order.

Unless the previous owner made his own shaft there are two holes drilled a few threads apart, and 90 deg. to each other for a cotter pin to go through a slotted nut. Depending on model of disc it will be 1 1/2" or 1 3/4", tighten to 400 ft.lb. or so. If he bought the disc new it came with a wrench the correct size, you had to supply your own "cheater" pipe.

Now that it ran loose, you will have a lot of dirt between every blade, and it will be a bugger to get tight again. A loose disk willcut the shaft with the loose blades on it. It will take a whole year of retightening it every few rounds to make it good.

As to holding it, put it on the ground, that will hold it a lot. I use a very large pipewrench on a spool as I have square shafts, I don't know if you have round, you may need to hold that far end shaft.

Shoup makes some pieces & parts that help to lock the nut on, as well as tentioners to put on the end to try to keep the blades tight. They have a web site.
