Worked gardens a lot when I was a kid, then went off to college, apartments, subdivisions, etc. Just moved out of town, got about 4 acres and an old Ford tractor, and have cleared a small garden spot and broken the ground up with a subsoiler. When I was a kid, we used a plow attachment on a front tine tiller to lay out furrows on small plots, or a "layoff plow" with moveable shanks and plow points (8" or so) to make two or three furrows with one pass of a tractor. Having trouble finding anything like that, nobody seems to know what I'm talking about. Either I'm talking to the wrong people, or I don't have a clue what I'm talking about. Can ya'll set me straight, and tell me what I need?

Like this? You can change the 'points' or shovels for a wide variety of jobs. This tool bar (2" solid square bar) is set up for 'marking' or furrowing for irrigation. When establishing a new field you can add 'scribes' or outriggers to each side that will make a line to follow with the tractors' front wheel to keep successive passes aligned. Add another bar, more shanks and chisel points and you have a chisel plow or whatever you can dream up!

I'm in Upstate South Carolina. I think what I used as a kid may have been a cultivator with some shanks removed and plow points added, as I think more about it.

If you can find an old Dearborn or Ferguson 2-row cultivator, you can take off the cultivator shanks and fit up some new shanks (pretty easy to make) with middlebuster shovels on them. That should do what you need. There were purpose-built Ferguson furrowers to do just what you say, but my neighbors with the tree nursery had to look for 10 years (!) until they found the one they now use.
