Keep looking and raise your limit :-). I had been thinking for several months that a skid loader would eb nice to have. Checked every couple of days on ebay and looked around some. What I did to find specs was I kept a tablet by the computer and I wrote down what the specs were listed for on each on ebay and then found the average for each model. That gave me an idea at least. I bid on a couple but they were going for $8000 up for what I wanted and most that I really needed were selling for well over $10000. Just kept it int he back of my mind and kept saving my pennies. Low and behold, back in January I went to look at some cows that I guy was selling cheap. He was showing me the equipment he wanted to sell and in the discussion he mentioned a Case 1845C, late 90's, low hours for $6000. Becasue of my research I knew this was a $12000+ machine. I bought it on the spot. It's been great, only thing is on wet ground you are pretty much stuck without tracks.

Some of the older Gehl's can be had pretty cheap around here..... ...The old 4400's with the t-handles mostly, they are a good machine. My grandfather has one and I believe he got it for $4500 in really nice shape. I like the tee-handles but I don't know anyone else who does..... ..... ...I have used it hard and the biggest weak point is the Ford Industrial engine, it is junk and hard to work on IMO. I am looking for one to put a vehicle engine in to make a real loader out of it!

Like the others have said you will need to spend about twice that much to get a skid steer that doesn't need a full time mechanic to keep it going. We have two skid steers that are 20 and almost 30 years old, they are the best thing on the farm when they are running but they are also the worst thing in the world to work on because of how compact they are. I would look at the Case 1835 for your needs, we've had a Case 1816 for almost 30 years and while it's getting to the point that it needs alot of little repairs but it has been used very hard.

you might consider a machine on tracks instead of tires.they have better flotation.the worst part of a skid steer and round bales is when you pick it up you can't see sqaut in front of you.another thing i've found out is you can't find a good used skid steer.there either good or used.good luck.

mm: They guys are right on one point, you will not get anything but trouble for that money. The early ones had basically two ratings 1200 lb and 1700 lb. The new ones now are well above that. Don't let guys deter you on the mud and sloppy conditions. I wouldn't look at one that is over 5 years old. These machines have the ability to beat themselves to bits. I bought two of these machines new in the mid 1970s. By 1981 they each had over 10,000 hours on them, and just farm use. I also had 6 tractors. The very worst ones out there are the ones traded off by farmers. Most of them never out of the manure.

Pd $2,400.00 for 1816 case. Got it small enough to clean tight barn. Like Dick said save your money. a good machine the likes you want is going to cost some money. The 1816 is liking my childhood train-set. Gotta fix it everytime I use it. For moving large hay bales I like the tractor best. Skid-steers tend to bottom out easily in mud & snow.
Use whatever this helps.
