Is this a good planter? I have 5 acres I want to plant in corn and milo. Does this planter use plates? Thanks for any help.

Chris,, I used one for 5 years, It was setup for a monitor but i couldn't make it work. I plant around 60 acres corn every year, had the monitor worked I would probably have a better opinion of it, I hated spot planting where a row would quit working and I wouldn't catch it for a round or two. Also the plateless units are big and unfriendly, very time consuming to check, and clean out. sweetcorn is a real pain, you might dump 2-3 lb. in a row and not see it because the plateless units are so big. Unless you have a working monitor you will not like using it for small jobs. Another thing I hated was the chain trip markers and the fact it didn't have a jack. In all fairness it did do a decent job for me. But I've since moved on and am glad I got away from these issues. I pulled mine out of the barn last fall I haven't dedided yet whether junk it or try to sell parts. I doubt theirs too much demand for parts so I'll probably junk it.

Chris, I have a later model plateless one that I'm happy with. I stripped a 1240 to 'overhaul' it and it hasn't given me any problems. I know from experience that you need to thorughly clean the finger-pick-up units after each season. It plants corn, soybeans and sorghum very well. Not a bad planter(for $300.)

Since you stripped a 1240 do you have any parts for sale to fit a 1240? I need 4 seed buckets for mine. Tim

Tim: e-mail if you like, and I'll see what's left. There may be 4 good ones. They're the rectangle ones, not the round ones.(Shipping may be a bear !) Rick
