Hello, Bought a JD494A planter at a sale this week. It had been sheded, but was put away last year with some corn in the boxes. Cleaned up real good. I greased it and all zerts took grease. Tires are ok. I've never used one of these. I have the basics figured out, with one exception. It has a small chain running toward the tongue...what does this do? It's just laying loose draped over the tongue, should it be connected? To What/Where?
Thanks in advance Deamer

plate info is still on the back of seed bags.most companies use accura-flats and rounds for plate planters. use bag weight per 80,000 seeds and go to guide tables.I always prefer rounds as flats sonetimes slide in giving doubles, olso try and get plates on the large sideof recomended scale for more constant flow. lastly ,count the seed slots on existing plate,16 or 24. A 24 plate lets you plant a little faster, but unit drives must be on 24 plate sproket(check manual)...tomont...

Thanks for the input. I did find a bracket in the herbicyde boxes that must be what the chains hook to on the drawbar. One spring was with it too. Must be that I need another one? Also I appreciate the help on the grease zerts, I just found some more. There are also many points to keep oiled. My neighbor came over to look it over. He has a model 490, but understands this 494a pretty much. he explained how to fold it up in case I wanted to store it that way later. Back to the chains...are they attached to the drawbar straight as to left chain to left side of bracket, right chain to right side of bracket or should they be crossed? I'm still trying to figure that part out. As for plates, all I have at this time is four metal ones which were in it. I understand how they work, just haven't done much with them. I went to a web site of Lincoln Ag. Products and found they carry quite a few of them...I just didn't think I'd be measureing corn kernals down to the 64th of an inch Length, width and depth to buy plates. How do you fellas size them for what you are planting? I'm putting out some corn and sunflowers to get used to the planter. The plates from Lincoln Ag are priced at $9.75 and $10.00 each. Does that seem right or is the seed places better prices? I got the flats and rounds figured out, but didn't even think about whether I got a 16 or 24 cell plates or what I should need/use. (slow/long learning curve!) Thank for the input. Deamer

Sounds like you found the bracket, you need a spring on each side, without the spring if you could get the chains hooked up when you turn it would tear things up, and they do not cross over to the other side, that would also tear things up, get that manual and you have to know if you have a closed, run in oil gearbox, or the newer open gears for speed adjustment, as for the plates a lot of seed dealers have them to loan when you buy the seed and will mate the seed to the corect plate, email if you need any help as I have 494A and 494 both

If you think you got all of the zerks, better go back and look again. I'm still finding new ones on ours, and Ive been greasing it for atleast 10 years now. the others are right on the chain. It goes to the marker control. I beleive the way it goes is, if you have the chins criss-crossed when on the tractor, you pull the side you're going to go to next, and then the right marker will fall. How many plates do you have for it? they are still fairly available around here, and you don't have to go to a deere dealer to find them. The seed suppliers ussually have what we need. The last few years(about 5 or so) we have been planting Mycogen seed corn and that stuff grows 12 ft. tall in a good feild. The shortest we ever had was 6 ft. Height combined with narrowiung ours up to 32" rows, we fill our silo's really fast now, and last year we piled about 10 loads behind our barn and we only plant about 30 acres total.

That is your marker control, hooks to a bracket on your drawbar to trip the marker to let it down after you make the turn at end of row and it is supposed to be 2 chains, one on each side

yeah, those manals are pricey from the dealership, but, to me, they are worth it, have alot more stuff in them than i thought. I bought an old 494A last fall for $10, guy was wanting to get rid of it. Allways shedded and used on about 40 acre farm since new. That was one good deal. Bought operators manual and parts book for it, cost me $70.
