Getting ready to spread what I cleaned out of the livestock lots last week, and then remembered I bent, then removed one slat from my spreader chain early last winter. It's 50 miles to the NH dealer, and I thought I could weld a piece of angle iron on instead of buying a new slat. However, they are not symetrical, the upper edge that is perpendicular to the floor is only half as tall as the other leg of the "L" or face of the angle iron, I suppose so it doesn't take such a big bite? My other issue is the type of steel, are these slats hardened or treated in any way? Should I just buck up and go buy one, or has anyone made their own before?

You could weld in a piece of flat bar stock to replace the bad slat as log as it was thick enough not to bend easily. I don't get to muck around with much farm equip anymore (all of the farms in my area of MA are growing houses now) but all of my street sanders use bar slats and they work okay.

It's a common trick with some manufacturers to use an odd size of steel so you can't go to a steel supplier to make your own. I had some sheared and bent in a press to match some JD slats, but after adding rivets and links on the ends, they cost almost as much as the JD slats, which were about $50 each.

I don't expect they are anything but mild steel. Why not have them ship you one? You can run without while you are waiting if you are careful not to load with the missing slat up. Run it around underneath.
