There is a baler listed at a consignment sale - no idea of background. What to look for? What is a reasonable price range? Parts availability?

Looks to have been stored inside but never cleaned up. Didn't see any serious rust. Looked in the twine compartment: there were several empty cans of penetrating oil, a discarded (worn out?) slip clutch and a pick up shield from the right side of the pick up. I would appreciate any information, bets, or insights. Dick Davis

Have a NH 271. Made about 7000 bales per year from early sixties til we got a kicker baler in early eighties. That baler would eat hay. Awesome machine. It's in back of shed ready to bale. Kicker baler ,then round baler sort of took over, but never had the heart to sell the 271.

We've had a 271 for over 30 yrs. Don't bale near as many bales per year as Paul, but baler has been practically bulletproof. Chains are starting to show some stretch, but otherwise OK. Only real problem, other than operator screw-ups, has been replacement of 3 flywheel bushings and to shim the arm that trips needles. Bushings are are not costly at all & are easily replaced. Check things Paul mentioned. P.S.-Paul,,, also pulled ours with a 300U until purchase of 484, although I still like to hook up the 350U Diesel to it once in a while.

Same exact machine as a 270, but the 271 has a better hitch/ pto setup.

Lower capacity machine, spits out bales about as fast as 1 person can handle on the back of a hayrack.....

Dad bought the 270 about when I was born slightly used, been spitting out 2-6,000 bales a year (over 40 years) every year, very low repairs. Worst thing was when a chain broke & dad forgot the timing issue, broke the needles & such. Otherwise it's been bulletproof.

Knotter wear is the big thing, usual chains, the flywheel gets loose over time - has a bushing. If the thing was greased often & kept up, should be a good one if you're not looking to bale the whole county.

On the 270 it takes a narrow tractor to not drive on the windrow as you bale; the 271 has a longer hitch, not sure if that helps. I use an IHC 300 with the right wheel way in, works well.
