JD 510 Baler

Checked all the old postings on a JD 510 baler.
As usual some liked it and some didn't.

I only need to bale 100 or so bales a year.
If I hire it done, it gets rained on by the time the neighbors get to it. They do theirs first.

I know I am under horsepower with a 550 Oliver (about 46 pto). With three old tractos now, I hate to get another one. Has anybody run a 510 with a similar tractor on level ground.

Two other things to check. The front compression rollers should have rubber on them. If not, it makes feeding hay into the baler difficult. The rubber wears off and rolls are expensive to replace. Another application for duct tape but it wears off. Deere has some tape for other rollers that will work too. Also, the outer belts (upper) had an option of wider belts (10" or so). They are a good investment. Keeps the outer belts from slipping over the edge of the bale when baling!

I have a J.D. 410 round baler, I bale with a J.D.3020. Works good, no problems.
They recomend 50 hp or more on the round baler.
The 510 is just a little bigger. than the 410.
See if the dealer would let you try the baler
with your tractor, before you buy.
It is a little tricky to start a bale,
but once you get used to it it's not bad.

Phil,
I run mine with a JD 5105. Around ~40 pto horses. No problems so far. I live south west of Houston on some of the flatest ground you'll ever see.
If you're looking at buying a 510 be sure and check the bottom belt roller with the rings on it. It hangs out the bottom of the baler. Those rings will wear right next to the shaft and break off. JD will ask somewhere in the neighborhood of $950 for a new one. Mine broke a couple of the rings off once and it took me about 6 months before I found a salvage baler to get one off of.
Also note these balers are not hydraulic tension, only spring tension so the bale density is not nearly what the newer balers produce.
They are also closed throat balers so starting a bale sometimes can be a bit tricky. When first starting to pick up hay, don't feed a wad of hay. Hay will "run up" between the feed rollers and the man guards on the front and pack in there so tight termites couldn't get it out. Only had this happen once when I first hit a wad the rake guy left while going both ways over the same place. He left a big square of hay and thought I would pick it up and guess what... Normal windrows as wide as the baler pickup and you'll be fine.
Keep an eye on the bearings. These balers are old and I've had a couple of bearings go out on me. You can order them online or get them from most any bearing dealer who sells ag bearings. There's a place in my home town that sells them so they're easy for me to get my hands on.

Thanks for the response.
I'm in the Ozarks but my hay fields are along the creeks and are fairly flat.
The John Deere dealer agreed with you on horsepower. Said I was at the bottom end, but should have enough if I watched it. Of course he's trying to sell the baler.
Wish I could justify a newer one, but with retirement coming up and only plan to run about 30-35 head of cattle I hate to buy new equipment.
I have an old small round baler (Rota Baler), but getting too old to haul in hay and store inside.

I know what you mean about justifying the cost of a new one. I can justify it but my banker/wife can't. Most affordable I've found is Vermeer has that Rebel 5400. I looked at them a good while back and the dealer priced one for around $13k. Agco has Hesston/New Idea/Challenger. I forget the exact model numbers but they are about a 3' wide by 4' tall bale. Dealer priced the Hesston at, if I remember right, around $10k. Didn't price the New Idea and at the time, didn't know Challenger even had round balers. Anyway, Vermeer would be the choice for me due to dealer location. I have three dealers pretty close in three different directions. What do the 510's sale for in your area. I've seen some at a monthly auction down here go for $500 to $750.

Oh, yea. One more thing. Before you bale up a field full of 5'x6' bales, try a couple to see if you can move them. If I bale a full size bale, I can't move them with that 5105. Looking now for a bale buggy or tumble bug to tow behing the 5105 for moving them. That would be alot easier on it than trying to lift them. Just not enough weight in the front to go with them. I can pick them up but when I put it in gear to go forward, it will try to raise up.

I hauled in 5 x 6 bales with this tractor this year. Front end feels like I have power steering. I take it easy.
I think this baler is a 4 x 5 or 6, isn't it.
The JD dealer had it priced at $2750 but lowered it to $1250. I just saw it from the road, but it looks like it was shedded or newly painted, or just has good paint on it. I'll look it over good Friday and definitely check the bottom roller like you suggested.
I guess I'm showing what little I know. Is the first number the diameter or the length of the bale. For some reason, I thought first number was length of bale, but i'm not so sure now.

The newer Deere balers do have the numbers aligning with the bale size like you said. 457 = 4 foot wide bale and 5 foot tall but the 410/510 aren't related to bale height. The first number is the bale width though. The 510 is 5 foot wide x 6 foot tall.
Sounds like you might have found a baler that was shedded all it's life. One way to know for sure is to look where the hydraulic cylinder that opens the tailgate attaches on the left side of the baler. Look at the bottom pin of the cylinder. One side of it is down in a hole that has a closed bottom. If that baler has been left out in the weather, it will rust out a hole through the sheet metal into the bale chamber. If it's been shedded most of it's life, there shouldn't be a hole in the sheet metal. But it sounds like you may have found a pretty good baler.
