Spreading dirt with a manure spreader

I have several piles of some nice black sandy loam that I would like to spread thinly on several locations on our place. Would a manure spreader do the job. I have a loader but feel I'll do more harm than good on some of the lawn areas using it to spread the dirt. Thanks, Lloyd

I used mine to spread some sand,, it did work ,, but I overloaded it once and replaced some chains after that,,, dont put much in it, my spreader is small, takes about 10 buckets of my 8n loader to fll with manure,, I use 4 scoops of sand on it,,,Jim

Dirt does not slide well, so you can only load 1/2 as much dirt as manure in a spreader. It's real easy to push that 'just a little' and rip up a perfectly good spreader into busted parts.

Other than that, it will spread dirt.

When I read the title, before I read your post, I came to the same conclusion- half full is full enough. Dirt weighs more per cubic foot than manure, so it is not worth pushing the limit. The spreader will do a fine job, as long as it is not overloaded.

I saw a Highway crew using a 1066 and a manure spreader spreading black dirt along a median after a road job.
