NH 68 Parts query

Was at an auction this weekend where I saw a fairly nice 68. Looking in the hay chamber at the feeder tines, I notices that there is a steel tube that runs across the hay chamber, and the feeder tines straddle it when pushing hay into the bale chamber. Theres a little jog to it, so that the mounting bar for the tines doesn't hit it. Is there a specific function of this bar?
It's missing in my baler, though the mounting brackets are there. Seems to work pretty well without it, but I was wondering if it would work better with it.

To chip and Kelly C and anyone else with a 68 style feeder: Remove that rod in any existing baler that you may have. NEVER put one in any baler that does not have it in. That rod is a pain in the behind. You will thank me some day for this simple advice. I'm not being smart. I'm very serious. Steve

Ok, Why is it a pain in the behind? I just happen to have my 68 in the shop gettin some spring lovin. So removing the bar should not be to hard.

That bar prevents the feeder forks from carrying the hay back out of the bale chamber.
