Planting 2 rows with 4 row planter

I have a four row IH 56 planter that I was given by a neighbor. I want to plant about 1/2 acre of sweet corn with it so I don't want to buy enough seed to run all four planters. Will it work to plant with just one side using just two rows, or will the other two rows uncover what I plant when I plant the next two rows? Should I change the row spacing of the rows I'm not using from the rows I am so the empty side won't unearth the full side? Does any of this make any sense to anyone? I hope someone can figure out what I'm asking and has dealt with this kind of thing before. Thanks.

You can plant with all 4 rows if you put a small amount in each box and drive slowly. Have someone walk along behind with a paintbrush to sweep the last of it into the plates, or get off at each end of the plot and check it.
Another alternative: On the #56 planter, pull the pin that sets the depth for the planter shoe, and adjust it so the shoe can't go in the ground on two rows.

how much trouble would it be to take the outside units off.

Put seed in 2 outside (either side) hoppers; plant in one direction only and "drag" back to the same starting end..... .

Wouldn't putting seed in #1 & #3 (or #2 & #4) row work best for that, turn around & com back in the same tire tracks? At least the marker situation would work out for him.

I'm thinking this is a plate planter, my old Case plate planter would plant out every kernal, not much for skip. I see the problem with some of the finger or such type of planters, perhaps this IH planter has issues with cleaning out during planting.

Would definitely work; just don't know how much the sword (I assume) or double disk openers would disturb the already planted seed, although..... .haven't we all done that (replanted 3 or 5 or 7 rows) when one row would throw a chain or run out of seed or get stopped up..... . with no apparent ill effect. Of course, we were replanting the disturbed rows.

If you plant a 1/2 acre of ground, it will take the same amount of seed whether you use a 1 row or a 24 row planter. Don't understand the 'problem'?

Just do a good job of dividing your seed by 4 and go plant. That will be the easiest.

Your way will disturb the seed some, and the row markers won't match up of course. I've reseeded some skiped rows in my day, so it does work, but kinda odd to get it right. I've blocked my extra rows full up (on a JD 7000) so they didn't go it the ground, don't know if you can do that on a IH.

I would need to buy extra seed to keep enough in the hopper to allow for coverage if I run all four rows. That's the problem, if I only need three or four pounds of seed to cover the half acre, I'll need to keep enough in the seed hoppers so it doesn't skip spaces as the seed gets low. I guess I can just double up on the seed and throw the unused away.

Don't throw the seed away, save it for next year.
If you store it in a dry place, it will germinate fine next year. I have planted 3 year old seed and got a good stand. Unfortunatly last year, the racoons got to the patch before I got the electric fence up and they had a hay day.

Please don't throw away the unused seed.

A lot of people plant home garden sweet corn at two week or so intervals. You should be able to find someone that would like the seed.

Maybe donate it to an agency that could pass it out to be planted. You might wind up feeding the hungry.

FFA demo plot?

Extension agency for different varieties plot.

Maybe the coffee shop crowd would have someone that would like to have a dab for hand planting. They might even buy your coffee.
