Pulling an extra-wide Implement in IL?

I have a pulltype combine that I want to pull from Wisconsin into Indiana, & avoid the Chicago, IL area like the plague! It is going to stick out toward the outside of the lanes probably about 5 feet +/- past the truck. Can I have some opinions on the best four lane highways running around all the chicago suburbs. The size of the machine does not bother me at all... As long as I have a wide road to travel, & the less traffic the better! Even a 2 lane highway with a wide berm would be very good for me! Thanks

hey didn't farm equipment used to be exempt from heigth and width regulations? I mean requiring permits anyway.

Sounds like Larry knows the roads pretty well in that area. Flag it real good and act dumb. Maybe try to pull it on a Sunday morning reaL early. I pulled an old Case pull type 175 mi. one time without a problem. About 35mph was where it pulled the best without whipping.

To those who are of concern about this idea, & recomending a trailer... The distance from center to center of the tires across is about 110 inches. I have looked at the possibility of a trailer a couple of weeks ago, & have found that the cutoff width on every one I looked at was 102 inches that means I am about 15 - 20 inches over from the ouside of the tires!

The second problem is that I would probably need a crane on both ends even at that do lift it safely on, & off! I dont see this as a feasible idea either way; But towing is far cheaper, & I beleive it can be safe as long as I stay well away from the medium - large cities, & high traffic areas! Does anyone know of a trailer that will work? It is going to have to be about 125 - 130 inches across the deck, & I beleive 120 inches is the legal limit in Indiana! I am not going to let hardly any of this machine hang over the edge!!! Your thoughts anyone... Thanks again to all who respond(ed)!

Any width is legal on a trailer with the right permits. With a SMV sign and a "good story" should anyone ?, MIGHT get you by pulling it down the road.

All depends on which side of the bed the DOT or representative of the local area you are in got up on that morning.

Hi Scott,
I agree that the best way is a trailer, but a pretty good route(long) is to use IL rte 47 to IL rte 52east. That will take you through Shorewood and Joliet where you will catch US Rte 30 E. 30 is a pretty good road to Indiana. If you have any problems, give me a call, I live in Roselle Il.

I have a much better idea, load the combine onto a trailer and haul it. The axle bearings on the combine probably are not good for a long trip. I won't even go into the legal issues for what you are wanting to do.
