Welding NH 451 mower cutter bar?

I'm sure this question has came up before. Is it possible to weld a broken cutter bar on a NH 451 sickle mower? It's broke through the bolt holes; so would setting the bar back, drilling new holes and welding an extension on the outside end work? I've offered this mower to a fellow for free...but he's asking if it can be fixed, without spending much money. I really don't know.

I have welded a umber of them. Not on a NH, but it shouldn't make much difference. Weld the holes right up solid and drill new ones after you're done. Most of the ones I have welded (and re-welded) were victims of some sort of abuse, usually being used as brush hogs, or mowing roadsides for the town. They were broken right next to the heel casting, or through the attaching bolt holes. I have also made a short bar into a longer one by welding part of another bar on to the outer end.

I assume you mean the big bar, not just the thin section holder.

My 501 had the big back bar welded when dad got it. It's worked fine for 20 years. However, not a job for a 1st time welder - needs to be good & straight alignment. Whatever broke it might have twisted it first. You need a good straight bar.

So the answer is yes, but it needs to be done well & you need to end up with a perfectly straight job.

I have welded these back together several times. Make a good chamfer on both pieces first & get a good hot weld. On one bar I have (that needs to be replaced) I have even welded the section to the bar for extra strength (you can weld through the rivet holes.

Yes, I have seen an Amishman weld the bar, but it should be pointed out that the Amish seem to be able to do things or at least have things done that the ordinary person can't. LOL! Steve
