I know this board is for older implements but there's alot of experience here with newer equipment also... so has anyone heard anything about Vermeer having a "new style" 554XL out? It's supposed to have a wide pickup from what I've been told. Was also told that the hp requirement was raised from 50 min to 65 min. Any one know anything about it? I would love to see one of these. The dealer next to me only has a 555XL and a 5400 Rebel right now.
Just curious,
Mike

Found a little more on the subject on Vermeer's web site. It's under the News section:

Its the same thing as the 555XL only it makes a 4x5 bale instead of a 5x5 bale like the 555XL. These are top of the line balers. The 5400 Rebel is a little bit cheaper built. Smaller bearings and doesn't have as many deluxe options like net wrap, Accu Bale & Tie, etc. All of these are really good balers.

You are almost correct the 554XL make a bale 4' wide and 65" tall which is 17% larger than the 5400 Rebel. The wide pickup is a waste of money unless you do allot of haylage. The Haversaver wheels on the standard 554XL baler add 18" of pickup to each side of the baler, effectively giving you a 7' wide pickup. For dry hay the standard pickup with haysaver wheels is all you need.
