I PURCHASED A JOHN DEERE 495A PLANTER. I HAVE BEEN READING THE OPERATORS MANUAL AND WAS WONDERING WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HILL DROP SEEDING AND DRILL SEEDING?

Hilldrop means all the seeds get dropped at the same time (in one 'hill'), whereas drill seeding means they are spaced out as the planter moves along. When you look at a hilldrop field from the side, you can almost determine cross rows, but they are not consistent like with using a wire to trip the mechanism. Drilled corn rows have no crossways row pattern. Hilldrop did not allow for cross-cultivation because the cross 'rows' were not consistent enough. With the advent of good herbicides, farmers went to drill seeding.

hill drop is where you can drop 2-4 seeds in a pile and pretty much see a definite cross view or check pattern of plants at emergence. there is a little striker bar down by the gear box that opens the valves in the seed dilivery chute each time the seed drop shaft comes around. if you donot hill drop and drill then you must move it to the side in nuetral otherwise the cast striker will break. most corn is drilled ( all kernals in a row) there is a vcr that you can buy called from seed to harvest filmed in spencer ia. that covers this real well and wire checking!!
