I posted this a few days ago in the machinery forum, before I found this one.
I am looking to purchase a small bale accumulator.
Would like suggestions on what to look for.
Has anyone used a Steffen System or a Hoelscher?

Dave, I have & use a "Farmhand" 8 bale accumulator with 2 sets of forks. 1 set for the field and 1 for the barn for off loading. The Farmhand works great and sometimes you can buy them at a reasonable cost. The other brands will cost you around 10,000+ new and almost as much used.
Of the 2 brands you mentioned the Hoelscher is the best as I have seen them both work many times. These things are the only way to go if you are going to put up much hay in small square bales. I suggest that you make your equipment work with one of them and not worry about a few inches..... Good luck....

Dave; I run a Hoeslcher system. You must know how to set them correctly. When this is accomplished they work very nice. You need to decide if you want bales on edge or flat. There are several types available. Some models are all mechanical and drag the bales on ground until the amount is gathered. Netherexe makes one like this. Let me know if interested as I can tell you the tricks to the Hoelscher system. The grapples also vary from brand to brand. I personally like the Hoelscher brand the best in that category. Give me a call 319-257-6764 where are you located, you can come look how I am setup if that would help. Have already had several others here about the same system. Rick

Rick,
I am located in Southern Illinois.
Have talked to people about the Hoelscher.
I like the looks of them, but am having trouble with not being able to fill the entire bed of a 102" wide trailer.
I talked to someone about running 34" bales and having 3 rows instead of 2, but was concerned with looks of a 34" bale compared to a 38" bale.
Can still get 55-60 lbs. in a 34" bale.
I am probably worrying to much about covering the floor of the trailer. I need to do the math and see if there is much difference in amount of bales on trailer.

I have never seen a Steffen but use a Hoelscher. They work great. Strongly recommend them as a quality product that has done the job.
