I have a question about antique steel wheeled trailer type plows.
What makes and models are considered the best?
What makes them better than the others?

Which ones do not quite cut it?

Just curious as my wife asked me this and I couldn't come up with anything close to an answer!

In my limited experience, the old John Deere with the curved cast iron beams would turn over two of the nicest slices that you ever say, and it would do it consistantly. My neighbor has one, but he is not selling, the bum.

JC: I was brought up on a IH Little Genius No.8 tractor plow, on steel, and 2x14. These were an excellent plow in my opinion. Here in Canada where we have competition antique plowing the MH No. 26 two bottom plow is very popular amoung competitors. John Deere, Oliver and Cockshutt also all made good 2 bottom trailer plows on steel. Those 5 were probably the largest manufacturers of plows 60 years ago, and probably sold 90% of the plows on farms across North America before 1960. My opinion all those farmers couldn't have been wrong.

JC: I grew up in an area where we hardly ever saw Case Equipment. Don't know anything about their plows. The other thing one has to remember is some of these plows were all made by a common manufacturer or at least parts of them were. I doubt if there were to many poor plows built by the 8 to 10 major manufacturers of that era. They all had a cheap plow and they all had top of the line plow as well.

Thanks for the information. I have an old JI Case 2 14" Centennial plow. I have plowed approximately 80 acre with it, but I let my uncle adjust it.
Pulled hard and didn't do a real good job. I found a manual for it and found that my dear old uncle had it way out of adjustment.
I just finished refurbishing it and painted it all up. Next week I plow 5 acres and this fall I will be plowing 40 acres.
I will see how this plow does when it is set up right and matched to the tractor. I bet it will do real good now.
