I recently bought one of these machines. While talking to a guy where I work he said he thought that NH had issued a service bulletin to drain all the gear oil out of the drive housings and replace it with grease. I was wondering if anyone knew of anything of this bulletin?

Hello farmertee. I just checked all service bulletins issued for the 255 and there are none about switching lubricants. I believe what your friend is thinking about is the 256/258 rolabar rakes. Those gearboxes should now have grease in them, but keep oil in the 255. Steve

What about the 56 roll a bar rakes. I have been putting 80-90 gear oil in the boxes in the spring and they are normally leaked out by the end of the season, putting grease in them sure would work better and make the rakes look better too. Will that work on the 56 rakes too?????

Steve,
Would that bulletin apply to the old 55's as well? I thought they all were using about the same gearbox.

You bet. 2 tubes of grease per gearbox. Steve

After the puddle that formed 2 years ago, my 55 is running on grease, but I'd be interested in the answer too. :)

The Kuhn Tedder (it is a tedder only - not a rake) runs bevel gearboxs and is specified to run flowable grease - like honey. Also bubble-up auger on NH combine harvesters use flowable grease. We have also used flowable grease in a conditioner gearbox that was leaking. I think it is OK - would use some more HP but better than running out of oil!! Our climate here is sort of temperate mediteranean. About 20 - 30 Celcius in spring. Bottom line - it won't hurt any thing in a slow speed box.
