Opening new land while plowing

I am using an old Case Centennial 2 14" pull type plow with iron wheels.

Two questions, when opening a new field, how should my furrow or "leveling" lever be adjusted.
Then after the first pass and my wheel is in the furrow, where should it be adjusted for the remainder of the field?

Nobody ever showed me how to plow; I just figured out what might work for me after my first effort left a ridge down the field. When I started a field or part of the field I went parallel about 30' from the edge the length of the field. I set the plow so the inside share was only going about 2-3" deep. When I came back I made sure I wasn't turning the shallow return furrow on top of the previous one, leaving a bit of space between them. I then leveled the plow and continued to the edge of the field, turning the furrows toward each other.

I started the next section about 90' away, the same way. When the space between got to about 60' I worked on the first section and the second, turning the furrows away from each other. When I got to the center between the two sections I tilted the plow so the last two furrows were only about 2" deep.

When I got done harrowing there were no humps or hollows showing. I have no idea if this was the right way to plow, but it worked for me.

On the first furrow, set the leveling lever as deep as it will go. On a JD 44, for example, that would be all the way up. On the next round, set the lever so the plow frame is level.

The plow (frame) should always be running level in the field.
