Just beyond where the teeth dischage into the bale chamber a closed throat baler has 2 rollers that the hay is squeezed between. Clearence is usually very tight (2 rollers touch). Open throat balers will have an open gap of several inches or more that the hay passes through before it enters the bale chamber. My experience with closed throat balers is that the hay must be in perfect condition, no sticks, twigs, damp slugs of hay, etc. If it isnt big mess. Older balers made a lot tighter roll if closed throat, newer (at least since 1990) no much difference, not sure if a closed throat is even in production now or not.

The last closed throat Vermeer baler was produced in 1977. John Deere only had a closed throat baler until 530 baler was introduced in 1986 using a Hesston patent.
