Uses for a 3-point Scoop Bucket

I finally got a tractor with a 3-point. It also has a fully-hydralic loader with manure and snow
buckets. My neighbor has a 3-pt scoop bucket that
he wants to sell me but I don't know if I need it.
What can I do with the scoop that I can't do with
the loader? It is in good shape, unloads both
directions and is priced at $150.

Thanks for any and all replys.

John

Depending on the brand, they are not much more
than he is asking NEW!!

The three point scoop digs and moves dirt a lot better than the loader on the small tractor. Better for landscaping and ditch digging. Its much easier to control depth.

Gerald,

can you explain why a scoop digs and moves dirt better than a loader?

I have a scoop and it has done well (but keeps getting torn up) and I have been considering a loader. I would have thought a loader would do better than a scoop other than for when you only want to dig a narrow area.

thanks

On a smaller tractor suitable for the 3 point scoop bucket, the scoop works better because:

The tractor is stronger at lifting at the rear. Get a good load in the bucket and the tractor back wheels may be in the air, at least lightened to have lost a lot of traction. A loaded three point scoop adds to traction.

The bucket cylinders tend to not have fine control of the bucket digging angle, so it either doesn't dig or heads for China. That's because the bucket tip cylinders of the farm tractor loader don't move much for a lot of bucket motion when the bucket bottom is level and the loader is down.

If the dirt is dry and loose bucket control isn't as much a problem, but its more of a problem with hard dirt.

But when I mounted my MF-236 loader on my JD4020 instead of my little MF-135, it works a lot better, though the 4020 has enough power and weight to handle a little bucket digging in. Even quite a lot of digging in. But there I have a lot more weight at the rear of the tractor so the loader doesn't affect traction significantly.

My neighbor with a JD 46A loader on a 2020 has the came complaints when digging with the loader bucket.

Gerald,

thanks for the comments. I'm not familiar with the JD tractors. How big is your JD4020? My Kubota is 43 HP and about 4000#, so I'm not sure if that would be in your JD category or not. Do you have the tires filled or use additional weight?

Thanks for the answers.

Ken
