I need something to cut brome hay! Vicon 2400 Disc Mower, is this one any good and how much is it worth at auction (used very little). Which is better? Disc mower or sickle mower? I have 72 hp deere tractor

Disc mower is far better than a sickle bar as for the vicon it should be a good machine but like all of the early disc mowers 6 disc or larger they tended to crack the cutterbar where the gearbox bolts on although later models have addressed this problem with strengthing bars along the back of the cutterbar although if it has been looked after it will be fine also check for oil leaks as well as movement in disc bearings as the early models will need the cutterbar split in half to renew bearings, later models have lift out disc stations so as to avoid dismantling the whole cutterbar. Check these things out and change the oil before every season and it should be a great machine

I had a Vicon disc mower over here in England, but it was called the 240.Whether it is a similar or same as the one above I do not know. It was known as the 240 as it had a 2.40 metre cutterbed i.e. approx 7'10" wide. I ran it on a 66hp MF 168 tractor and she 'played with it'. It was a very good machine, and it little or no trouble, but like everything else, it all depends on how the machine is maintained. Ideally, the oil in the cutterbed and gearbox should be changed annually.
Now then, at the risk of repeating myself, once you have used a disc mower, you will wonder why on earth you struggled with a sickle mower!
