Mike from Canada hit it right on! The two main things you need are; 1)patience 2)a lead person.
If those animals have never done this work b4 they think they are taking you for a buggy ride!
When I was a kid, the neighbors gramps cut hay and planted with horses 'til 1950. My job was to get a quart jar of lemonade from my mother, stand at the fence until he stopped for a drink and gave me a ride up and back. As I aged, I remembered that the only commands he gave them while planting was when he had to stop to fill the seed hoppers. At the end of a row, they knew when he picked up his marker they would turn the right way every time and follow the marker perfectly. Good luck Larry NE IL

you steer the plow by leaning the handles one way or the other

What is it you need to straighten out? Your horse goes first, your plow next, then you:) After that you make crooked rows until you and the horse learn how to work together so you can make straight rows!

Frustrated in Texas, you need to teach your team Gee and Haw and it will simplify your "horse"work. Sometimes a person at the halter leading them through the first few rounds will get them educated and they will follow the routine much better..... Mike in Exeter Ontario

Yes I think this is the best approach. An old neighbor of mine passed away several years ago and had an old mule that he had plowed with for years. Well his widow sold the mule to another neighbor that had long wanted it. A couple of weeks later the man came back complaining that the mule would plow one row and the he could not get it to move for the next row for about 20 minutes ! I overheard this and explained to the man. The mule had grown accustomed to the man growing older and needing to rest after each row. The upshot of this is, it will take some time to train a good plow horse/mule and then things will work out fine. It takes patience on both your and the horses part.

Good luck and take your time, the Horse will learn.

Hi, hope you have no rocks in your farm. My dad would tell stories of plowing with a walking plow behind a team of horses. You would tie the lines around the back of your neck so you could steer the horses by moving your upper body from one side to the other while steering the walking plow with your hands. If the plow hit a rock and you didn't let go of the handles immediately you would be propelled through the air.

Good luck
JB
