Ok my brain quit.
What are you guys averaging for small square bales per acre for grass hay?
Getting ready to buy a 25 acre hay field just trying to get a idea of what to expect.

Hey Kelly, down south here we usually average 100 bales per acre for good coastal bermuda. That is usually average for the south.

Tight, plastic tied, 55# to the 38" bale, 16-18% moisture;

timothy: 140-220 most at 160 on poorly drained, tiled bottoms with 250# 34-0-0 per acre with one cutting. Was going to play this year with drilling soybeans beans in it for fall baleage but I cant buy $18 a bag (non RR) seed beans for that.

orchard grass and fescue: 80-150 depending on N levels on first cutting; I always roll the second and on the 3rd I need 80 or I'll roll it

I just received a request from a hay dealer wanting to buy standing alfafa, that they would cut and bale and haul. How do you put a value on alfafa when it's still under snow? Is there a rule of thumb as per acre production worth on alfafa that is 5 years old?
Thanks...

My short answer would be 'you cant put a value on it now'. What you can put a value on is rent of 1 year's use of your stand. I have a 68 acre field, isolated from the rest of my farm, some of the best land I own but over a mile overland to get to it (no buildings or fence on it either ). My neighbor that joins me on that side and I have a standing arrangement. He cuts, rakes, and square bales, and puts in the barn the field (right now a 1/3 alfalfa, 1/3 wheat double crop grain sorghum (going into alfalfa in spring of '05), and 1/3 timothy) for 1/2 then he buys my half of the hay at $100 per ton ($2.50 per square bale), silage at $40 per ton or I can take my half in hay (at my option). It would be about the same money to rent it cash for $250 per acre on the averages. I pay for all the seed, fertilizer, and chemicals and put them on. He uses all his own hay equipment, twine, and fuel. It's been a God-send to me, seasonal cash flow and it frees me up to do a better job with the rest of my hay.
