sickle mower ledger plates

I have a 501 Ford mower - mow about 10 acres a year - so not big time - have used it about 3 years - it is getting better every year as I get it tuned and adjusted better - it is a 9' model - not sure if it looks like a factory job or not -

ANYWAY - I put all new sickle sections in before the start of last year - I have hammered all the guards up and down and beat and adjusted the hold downs until it appears I have relatively good contact - it mows OK but if the going gets the LEAST bit tough it starts to chatter a lot, the belt slips (it could be a little tighter I know) and the only remedy is to go at a snails pace while mowing -

I mowed with the brother in law's IH 1100 - talk about a difference - the sickle cycles about three times faster and ground speed is virutally unstoppable - nothing like mine

WHICH brings me to the question at hand - obvious ly the guards are old - probably some are older than me - but the edges look pretty reasonable - how can I tell if I need to replace the guards just to get better ledger plates?

If I go about 1/4 of a mph I can cut anything - leaning thick wet, etc, and not have too bad a luck - but I can not travel at any kind of reasonable speed

I just replaced a lot of ledger plates on my 501. They are not cheap but a lot less then new guards. I ordered a kit, which will include the rivits. It made a lot of difference. Bill

The ledger plates are riveted to the gaurds. I put aftermarket spring loaded hold down clips on,that made a difference, too.The belt needs to be tight, those bolts that hold it tight need to be tight. You have to have lead on the sickle bar.You really should get a manual at the New Holland dealer.Oh yeah, they made three diferent sized drive pulleys also.Maybe you've got the smallest dia.thats why your sickle cuts slow.

I assume you are using a good sharp sickle that the sections are not worn out, so I would definitely change ledger plates. Your mower should perform much better than you describe.
Good luck!
