I am thinking of replacing the rolls in my NH 488. What kind of job is it to replace them? I looked at it quick and i didn't even see a way to get the old ones out. Thanks for the help.
Josh

the cost of the rollers stops many people. I called the company that made the roller for the old vermeer balers, they have plans to start rebuilding crimping roller for most brands.

If I recall, last year someone in the group talked about refurbishing the rollers by welding strips of steel in place of the rubber cleats. Any more details available? Is this something that could be done with the rollers still in the machine, albeit with the covers off? I would think that it would be a lot of work to get the rollers to mesh correctly, but the job would only have to be done once.
If you've done this, please speak up!
Thanks.

Hey Josh, replacing rolls in your 488 is not necessarily a complicated job, but there is some work involved. I have done quite a few machines in my 27 years working here, and I would say I have it down to about 10 hours. Believe me, the first couple of machines took me a lot longer. Is it worth it? I'm not sure. How is the rest of your machine? If a dealer does it for you, the cost will be about $2000+ dollars. If you do it your self, you will save the labor, but the cost of the rolls and bearings is about $1600 dollars. Hope this helps, Steve

Josh, 2 things, (1) they are expensive & (2) this is a job you start in the fall and hope to be done by spring. I've changed them and I'll never do it again unless I absolutely have to. Maybe after you've changed 4 or 5 sets it gets easier but believe me you don't want that much practice. Look for another unit with good rolls. Good luck.....

Take my advice. Buy another one. This is a job and a half, even if you know what you are doing.

Not to be contray but I did mine several years ago and it was not a particularly difficult job.

At the cost of the new rolls, it may have been better to buy another good used machine but here in the NE they are hard to come by.

I am happy with my decision
