I am looking for a small round baler(4x4/4x5)that can be used with a 52 hp tractor. I am sure that I will be looking for a used one well under $10,000. I have seen several Hesston and New Idea models.I want a well built baler with no frills. I would prefer hydraulic or manual tie over electric. What are some good models to choose from or bad ones to stay away from? I live on the Cumberlan Plateau in Tennessee. Thanks Don

I have a Ford round baler 553 and it is not a good one to get it baler slow and take so long to make a good roll. The best one I thing is a Hesston. Round baler a friend of my got one and it does real good and don't have much problm out of them. Thomas and Brenda

I was the last one to jump on the round bale bandwagon. I have a very good market for square baled hay and straw, so I just didn't need one. A few of my "regular cusomers" needed round bales. last summer, I got a Vermeer Rebel 5400 (new) I know you're wanting to invest a little less than the cost of a new one, but my point is, I'm extremely happy with the Vermeer. I'm one of those guys that bleed green. Won't give anything a chance unless it has the "leaping Deere" emblem. Well, I was wrong about the round balers. Deere makes a good one, but NOTHING could be any better than the quality of a Vermeer. The 5400 runs on low horsepower, makes a tight bale, and is simple to maintain. I like the 5'x4' bale size. I sell quite a few to people that want 'em loaded into the back of a pick-up truck. 5'x4' is a good size for that. Look at a new baler first. They might not be so far out of your price range. Nothing like new! John

If I were in the market for a new baler, it would be a Vermeer without a doubt. They invented the big round baler, so it stands to reason that they have the most experience. As a sidenote: I remember traveling down to Pella, IA back in about 1969 with a friend to look at the then "new fangled idea" of a big round baler. What a deal!...you started the bale around a wooden post that stuck out of both sides, that you later used to lift the bale, using a loader and chain. Those bales were like a ton or more in weight. We both left, shaking our heads, wondering who would ever want to work with bales like that!

Look at the later thread regarding the Gehl 1310 baler. We have one that we use behind a Case 730 Diesel, and it works well. If you can find one, they seem to be in the $2500 to 3500 range.

I have a 3640 caseih makes a 4X6 bale Run it with a 756 Diesel. paid around 4,000 for it has hydrulic tie. Traded a 5800 hesston for it like it alot bales weigh about 880 to1440 its a softcentered baler we mow one day and then rake and bale the next day there isn't much spoilage since the center is soft which lets the air flow through th center I bought it used about ten years ago all that ive done is put in new teeth and 1 bearing. We usually put up about 300 to400 bales a year

For ease of use & fewer moving parts & little power needed to operate an M&W or Krone would be tops. They make a very tight bale that holds shape. Some NH and some Vemeers have good reputations, too.

We have a Ford/New Holland 630 4x4 roller W/elec tie. It sure packs the hay. We had a Hesston we bought new several years ago. It was ok. It didn't roll real tight, and it had the manual tie. I didn't like that at the end of the day. We had an auction and sold it with other machinery.

I got my NH 650 (4x6, which I run on 4x4 and 4x5 also) for $7500 off a dealers lot 4 years ago (it is a 92 model). Makes a great bale. I've rolled about 4500 with it so far. This past winter I put new belts in it (had origional belts) and added hay saver wheels.

I can only really speak for Vermeer balers. Look for the 504 series F,G,H,I models. The Massey crossover list is on page three or four now.

We bought a new 4x4 hesston last winter. It works but not like a new one should. Almost everytime it was used the dealer had to come out, and they refused to come out even though it is under warranty. A call to hesston headquarters helped that, but the baler is still very prone to trouble. You have to be a mechanic just to get the thing to bale hay. I would not recomend another. I would go with a New Holland. The base model was just a little more expensive, but people nearby who have them really like them. A neighbor has a vermeer that he really likes.

I'd like to post a vote from australia for vermeer/massey as it uses little horses and is very neat sides of bales. Some have hydraulic tie.
