I have a Woods 72" rear discharge finish mower behind an Oliver 550 Diesel( 40 HP). Every week we mow 8 acres of grass (lawn) and this rig seems to do a fine job. I have seen flail mowers for sale and wonder if this would work even better than the Woods setup? What would be the pros and cons of a flail mower ?? I know nothing about flail mowers and would appreciate any words of wisdom you might have for me. Thanks, BB in Western PA

I can tell you that a flail takes more power than a spinning blade-type mower... It will not do as nice a job of cutting as a finish mower.. I like my flail for pasture work, tho...it picks up all the stuff the wheels tramp down.. Mine is a Ford 78" flail, and it takes all a 40 horse power tractor has...sometimes More..!! I put Ford Intake valve springs under my wheel pivots on my Woods 372 finish mower...it rides real smooth now, and doesent bounce..!!

Ron, Thanks for your response and the good tip re springs. It sounds like I have a really good grass cutting rig now and a flail mower would not be an inprovement. Comments??? BB

It all depends on what you need to do...

The flail is a little more maintenance-free..and will take more abuse than a finish mower..the flail of mine has the full length roller on the rear, and it does smooth the bumps out( and mole hills)...it is pretty heavy.. Blades are about $2.oo each and there are 39 of them on mine...have only had to change them once two years ago, and they are still sharp.. Mine won't cut brush...I have to use a Bush Hog for that... I wouldn't want to use a Woods finish mower in a pasture...I think it is too hard on the mower..mine is a side-discharge 72" 3-point.. I agree that the finish mower is a good outfit for doing a nice job... The Ford Intake Valve springs are from a 390 Ford engine, and work perfect..!! They settle down to a perfect Lawn-height...and the wheels don't beat around like they did before..!! Just take the flat stiffeners out of the inside of the springs so they will fit the spindles.. Keep them greased, and they will last many years..!! We have a Mower-Surplus outlet Warehouse near here (Shelby, Ohio) and I can get blades much cheaper there.. They have about every blasted thing you would want for a Lawn mower...New engines, Blades, transmissions..etc..I was surprised to see they had blades for Woods mowers, etc, too.. Ron.
