No chain curtain for the rotary mower ?

Most of the rotary mowers I've seen and or have bought have the front chain safety curtain missing. If you can locate the one that will fit, locating a replacement chain curtain is expensive regardles of manufacturer (more than the cost of the mower at times). Making one yourself is tedious,extremely time consuming and almost as expensive. So, for what it's worth and "anything is better than nothing" I've gone to using conveyor belting and bolting a strip of the belting onto the front. I use the 'permanent' thread lock on the bolts after cutting the belt the size I needed. I've used the same arraignment for a belt off the rear of the mower but cut the belting so that it will lay down and drag behind the mower box. This works okay, except when positioning (backing up). I haven't figured out what to do about that other than to not back up. This seems to work out okay, I don't have ditritus hitting me in the back or whacking my ears anymore. Oh Well, someday....

Interesting post. I went through the same problems and solutions/attempted solutions. One of my problems with chains is in the front center where it gets forced back into the blade.

I did as you did. I had just replaced the belts on my round bailer and these were 5" thick. Would have prefered 6-7" but 5 is better than 0. I built a bracket out of 3x3 angle to get them out away from the cutter blade and put in 2 layers. Screwed them to the angle every 6" with 5/16 bolts then welded the assy to the mower. Works great and no more projectiles whizzing by my head.
