Found one of these that a guy is asking $100 for. It has been sitting outside, probably for at least 10 years, and is not in working condition. It needs a gear on the bar in the back, new chains, possibly some bearings. The only thing I found that is actually locked up, is one of the stars in the fertilizer box. The boxes are not rusted out yet. Around here grain drills sell for between $600 and $1000 in working condition. Do you think this would make a decent project to try and restore, or is it just a waste of time and money? jstpa

Restoring an FB right now. I bought it in what was described in working condition, was not. Found all the fertilizer bushing locked up. Its not the wheels you have to worry about but the bushing under neath them. When the bushing lock up it generally breaks the gear that drives them, there are 2. Look for rusted out collectors, and mud daubers in the rubber tubes. Also missing drag chains, there should be 15 x $3.75 a piece. Takes heat, penetratling oil to free up the bushings. A power washer is a must. Also look for broken springs in the mech. that the lever trips to make it go up and down. If you have a grass seeder attachment you may have to find something for the down tubes for these. Expect to spend at least $200 dollars to get this thing field ready. Once everything is working, wash fertilizer boxes with a hose and dump diesel fuel around the bushing before storing for next winter. Russ

Russ,
Thank you for the quick follow up.You answered quite a bit of what I was wondering. If I only have to put another $200 in it I'm going to get it. I look at some of the prices I see for these things on these boards and wish that's all the things would go for around here, but I think all the old equipment brings more around here than in alot of places. Is the manuals for an fb going to be the same for my fb-a or are they specific to each model? Thanks again for you help. jstpa

I'm interested, if you want to sell yours. If so, e-mail me. If we're not too far apart, I'd like to get ahold of another drill. [email protected] Thanks. John

If the info is still there on the one I bought for 135.00 had a lot of the settings on the underside of the covers. The $200 was just a guess based on what I have spent, I thought I would be doing wheat last fall, but the job is still not but about 80% done. Of course my wife being in the hsp for 40 days has not helped. I think manual arfe still available, but I do not have any, just using common sense, and plain old hard work. My email is [email protected] and I think I have some pictures on can take some if you need this. Russ
