I made another post abou a 14T and a 66 baler for sale at an upcoming auction. There will also be two Deere rakes, a 660 rolabar and 662, and one NH 258. Which rake is better and what would they cost. I will also need to pull these behind an H or Ford 3000. Thanks in advance.

In compariable condition, the NH 258 would be the best choice, even though it will sell for more. I have a nice 258 Bean Rake with dolly wheels that I bought at auction 6 years ago for $1200, and it has worked perfectly every year.
Don't wait much longer to buy one...the closer to haying season, the higher the price will be.

Both are good rakes. I've got a 670 and I have seen lots of NH rakes since I work for a NH dealership in the summer. Before I would say one or the other, look at what kind of shape they are in. If you are gonna have to put major dollars in one and not the other that can sure help you pick. They are both good rakes. Major difference should be a PTO type disconnect on the ground drive for the JD and a pin to take out for the disconnect on the NH.

Definately get the 258. I'm sure you'll pay more for it than the Deeres. I have a 258 that we bought new back in the 70's and use it when baling square bales (our 8 wheel rake makes too big of a windrow for our square baler). I've prob rebuilt the wheels and gear box 3 or 4 times and it still rakes like it was new. They're hard to beat.

I have 2 model 56 new holland rakes and they rake very clean. Completly going through the tine bars on the oldest one. Bout 400.00 worth of bearings and mis parts. Should run for countless years as this is the first time I've done this and I've had the rake for probably 15 years. So yea I would recommend New Holland rakes, I run mostly deere equipment but really am not fond of the rakes, not saying they are bad now I'm just not fond of them. I like my red an yeller rakes! I just wish they were 258's instead which would be a foot wider raking width.

The NH rake will bring around 30% to 40% more on the sale than the JD rakes.
I have only run NH and like them, but I imagine the JD rakes will be good, and have dealer support, as will the NH.
If you want to save a few $ then watch the NH sell and buy JD.

You should be able to pick up a 258 I would think for 8 to $1500. Depends on the shape of course and if someone else wants it.

I personally don't know that much about the deere rakes but I own a NH 56 rake and it does a very good job. Therefore I would recommend the 258. Just my opinion.
