Anthony,I live 30 miles S of Ft.Worth and have been planting oats and wheat for several years for cattle to graze.I tandem disk two or thre times, sling out fertilizer, then sling out wheat and oats, plow in with field cultivator.NO drill, works great, faster than drill,no sacks to tote and get rid of.If weather permits I try to have it in ground by Sept. 15 but did have to spray for the pesky armyworms last fall.I don't try to till very deep because if it rains much in fall and winter cattle will bog to their bellies as I never pull them off of the wheat.Jim B

Anthony, A good 13 shank cheisel plow would be helpful. Chiesel 2 times first, the disc 2 or 3 times. Start as soon as possible, for spring rains will help dissolve the big clods. And you will have the whole summer to get this 40 acre field in shape for fall.
Set the drill at about 100 to 120 lbs/ acre since you are going to graze it. The trick to getting in Oats or Wheat in Central Texas is early, but not to early for the Army-worms will get into it and you have to spend a small fortune to kill the army-worms. In the Central Texas region October 1st is a good planting time.
It also gets up enough to attract the deer for deer season too. Hollar if I can of help!
Later,
John A.
