New Holland 477 - any thoughts?

Will be looking at a 477 tomorrow. The fella is asking 1200 for it. Was this model a good haybine? 7 ft.? Anything particular to check out?

Hello Mike, the 477 is now approximately 30 years old. Having said that, I still consider it one of the best 7ft haybines to this day. Unless it was hammered and is totally wore out, I would not be afraid of a 477. Take a quick look at the roll drive sprockets. They did have a habit of coming loose on the roll shaft. Other than that, they are pretty solid. Steve

Back in the 70's, & 80's my family knew a gentleman that had either a 477, or a 467! He lived between our farm & the closest town. It seemes like about 25 - 35% of the times we drove by while he was mowing hay; that machine was plugged up, & you could see several spots throughout the field where he had to stop, & back up! We had a NH 489 my father bought in 1978 that we put about 800 one pass acres on it, & I can honestly, & truly say that not one time in the 8 years we had it did it ever clog up!!! NH had several features that were a vast improvement over the economy models which a 477 would fall under! You might have good luck with one! but if You dont mind spending extra money I would go with the "472" 7' 3", or "489" 9' 3" cut. Knowing what I know from the past I wouldnt touch it unless I had less than 10 acres (each cutting) of hay to mow, & someone would have to make me a superb deal on it at that!!!

Must've been a 467. A friend of mine had one, plugged it a lot. I had a 477. Much better, cut 40 acres a year, never plugged. Unfortunately, I had to replace it with a wider machine (JD 1209). Now I have an M-C Rotary Scythe. Say what you will about the flail cutters, they make soft grass hay that all my customers now want, and they don't plug. I can shred stalks with it, too.
