Hello, I am curious about a pea (or corn...) planter that we bought today, I was wondering how old it is, I dont think its REALLY old like worth money or anything, ( well it is to me, means I dont have to follow the tractor and hand plant... :)).

The only thing I could find on it is 25 B is on the front of both seed hoppers, it has the Fertilizer bins, and other than sticker fading and some paint loss is in really good shape, there is a little surface rust, but for what we need it for its great.

I called around to local dealers today and noone could get me anything smaller than a 4 row planter price, said JD didnt make a 2 row anymore. ????? He also wouldnt tell me what a 4 row goes for.. Since I bought this one used I was wondering what a new one would go for, but I guess they dont have a comperable price.??

I can post a picture tomorow if anyone wants to see one. Anyway, Thanks for any help or insite. :)

Chelle

I bought a single row John Deere Model 111 with Pea attachment. In order to identify it, I took the casting number from one of the main castings on the machine to my John Deere Dealer Parts Dept. They were able ot identify and run mea complete parts list in just minutes.

I got my old two row Allis Chalmer drill out of the barn the other day and tried to get some information from an old Allis (now AGCO) dealer. He had a sales brochure showing my two row planter with fertilizer buckets, and right below it was a set up where they had two of these hooked side by side to create a four row planting system. I think they called it a Lister planter. I also saw it in a special brochure that this web site is working on but does not have available for sale yet. As far as price is concerned, I could not be of help there as I was 4 years old when dad bought it.

Post the picture, Could also be a 246 with seperate pea boxes or something like that, could also be the individual units, so many variables, also post a picture with any numbers on the plate, then we can tell you what you have, do you have any row markers?

Yes you have the unit planter and those are the row markers and that is what you use to keep the rows straight and the same width apart, you need to take those pictures with you to your John Deere dealer and have him order you an operators manual and a parts manual, then you will understand how to mount the markers and those manuals will help you with the plates

Sounds like you have a planter made out of two 25B row units, '60s vintage. Since Deere dropped the #71 row units last year, they do not make anything smaller than 4 row. A new 4 row will be in the neighborhood of $9000, last I checked. There is a place in Pennsylvania that makes 2-row planters with JD Maxi-Merge planter units, but a new frame with reconditioned planter units, and new liquid fertilizer attachment, will run close to $4000.

WOW!! glad I only paid 200 for this one! LOL Thank you for yoru help! when I looked at the stickers it looked kinda 60's. But I am not good at that kind of stuff! so was this hand made with 2 or could they be sold like that? it doesnt look 'fabricated' but they could have painted over and redone it so well that you would never know. But that is the model number? I just wonder cause I know all it has is the pea plate, not sure if the old corn plate I have will fit it or not, so we might need some more? or anyother parts that might break? Luckily the hoppers look very sound. Thanks again, I guess it pays to advertise for stuff doesnt it? We had some folks call that wanted over $400 for a one row, (not JD) and just couldnt pass this deal up (and this was not knowing that 2's wernt made anymore and 4's were so high... ) I am glad we didnt. :)

In the book John Deere Tractors and Equipment, Vol II, by Don Macmillan and Roy Harrington, Page 114, is a good view of a 2-row planter made up of a factory JD toolbar with 25B unit planters, being pulled by a 2010 tractor.

look on ebay, business & industrial > farm > implements > planting and seeding equipment. there are usually 2-3 two-row planters on sale there at any given time. i bought mine for $75 and it's pretty old. ones in good condition go for several hundred or more.
