I am making a 24' JD 1100 field cultivator into a 15 footer. It is a 3point model and I was wondering if I still need gauge wheels on it. The wheel axles are not in the best condition.

The gauge wheels are what control operating depth- no matter the width of the implement. You need to set the load control on your tractor to allow for some flex, rather than leaving the 3ph rigid. That allows the implement to remain at a constant depth even though the front tractor wheels are going over uneven ground. If left rigid, when the front wheels go up, the implement goes down.

It is probable that C10 did not have the guage wheels but it probably was no wider either than 10', with smaller equipment you could get by better without, I had a Ford 14 1/2' that I bought used, first year the wide setting, 2nd year took wings off for 10 1/2' but still needed the gauage wheels, perfectaly flat land beter for without but unfortuantly most lann is not flat and without those wheels one side will hit a high spot and try to dig to China
