Wood sealer's for hay racks

Was wondering what you all treat your hay racks with for those like me, that have to leave them outside? I'm aware of the deck/wood sealers at the home improvement store's. Just thought there might be other answers to treating the wood on my hay racks. My racks are of oak and will have to be stored outside due to lack of storage space in side. Just want my new racks to last as long as possible.

Maybe a stupid question, but here it is anyway. Would it be worth it to set them up on edge so the water runs off of them during the off-season?

I wouldn't go that far, but there is a long depression behind the hayshed where I park all my wagons with the back wheels in it so that the beds have a pitch to them. That way, when the snow melts, the water doesn't just puddle up on them.

I have two hay racks 25-30 years old. I've been coating them every other year with used oil. I do it when the racks are hot and dry, sometimes heating the oil in a metal pail using a knipco heater. This has been working very well for me.

Matthew, I use Thompson's water seal, which I put in my weed sprayer and spray onto the racks and ladders, it only takes a few minutes and I try to do it once a year when I get the wagons out of the barn. They are then outside for the summer until the hay and straw are done. Since the water seal soaks right into the wood it will have no effect as to your surface being slippery. Slippery surface is the result of planed lumber and of course straw chaff which can make any surface slippy..... .Mike in Exeter Ontario

But be careful about the bed. I helped a guy unload wagons after he sealed the bed. It was so slippery you couldn't carry a bale from one sie to the other.

Repeated soakings of used motor oil is about as good as it gets. Say it is your part or the recycle efforts.

Also, before you apply the oil, make sure you've blown off all the chaff and hayseed from everyplace on the wagon. Gives less places for moisture to collect.

I agree completely. Oil is the only way to go, and be generous, it will soak in.

I'm writing a biography about my husband. He grew up in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. There's a story about harvest time and one of the implements they used was a hay rack. I am trying to find a picture of a hay rack. Any suggestions. Thank you.
