Old style JD Hydraulic Cylinder Rebuild questions?

I posted this on the JD board with no responses so I thought to try here. I just started to rebuild my JD 2 1/2" RC 1501 Hydraulic cylinder ( The old one with the 2 depth stops on the outside). I stripped off the paint, washed it in the parts washer then disassembled it and now have some questions. I will be useing it for 1 way operation (one hose). Does the gasket near the 4 big bolts need any sealer (RTV or something) on it? That was where mine was leaking from but I decided to rebuild the whole thing. Is there a big o-ring that goes there (Mine had nothing). Does the gasket on the rod end need any sealer? Mine had 2 gaskets there, do they normally put a few gaskets on that side and over time, if there is a leak just remove one to make it tighter? My cylinder tube has some scoreing going in both directions, should I hone it? If so, should I use a flat type hone starting with coarse, then medimum then fine or should I use a ball type hone? Should I keep the cylinder lubricated with 30 wt non -det. hydraulic oil (The type I use in the hydraulic cylinder or use a regular cutting oil? Thanks!!!

Thanks Mike!!! From what you describe, mine is the newer style. Were the 4 bolt gasket and the rod gaskets available for yours? I will probably have to take out an add. Again thanks!!!

Yes, the kit was available for mine but only for the newer style piston. I had to run an ad for the newer piston on here in fact but Deere had the kit for it. The kit contained the base(4 hole) gasket, 5 new v-seals, 10 thin shim gaskets for the v-seal retaining plate, new aluminum washer for the inspection bolt, 2 piston seals and 2 paper seal backings. I believe it run me about $60 through deere.

Maybe some nice person here on this message board can give you a part number for the kit. That would make it easier for the dealer to find it for you. I would give you a part number same as mine but I have a 3" cylinder for the "A".

I don't have all the answers you seek, but here is what I know. Using service manual SM2011, nothing is said about using sealant on the gaskets. The piston rod and cylinder bore should be free of scratches and burrs, if not use a fine hone and remove them. The gaskets on the piston top end are used to adjust the the friction on the piston. Using a spring scale, deduct shims until with two cap screws tight, a pull of approximatelly 4 pounds will move the oiled piston rod through the V-seal. There is no O-ring on the end cap. I am using 30wt non-detergent oil in mine with my letter tractors.

I bought mine from the John deere dealer as a kit. but mine was for a 3 inch cylinder- to fit my 'A'. I didn't use any sealer for the end gasket because the book said to tighten the bolts own to 125 lbs,and if you use a sealer you might force the gasket out the side. Wally's right about the shims around the rod in front.

Thanks Mike!!! My dealer is having a hard time. They are an old time dealer and did try hard. They went to the Model B parts book, found the cylinder but the seal kit came up no longer available. Is there any clue you can give me? Do I have to order the parts seperatly? Thanks again!!!

My cylinder is for an 'A' so maybe they still had some kits left, I couldn't get any parts for it separately. If I were you I would try an add on this site for a "new old stock' Kit, I needed a new type internal piston- the one I had was obsolete and no parts were available. I put an add on this site and I was surprised when I got a lot of replies, I found what I needed right away. A lot of people make it a business of going around to auctions and buying new old stock parts for resale. I bet you can find a kit in you price range. Mike

One more thing John, check your inside piston and take it to your dealer and make sure it hasn't been subbed out to a later style because if it was like mine(the older obsolete kind), they are not going to have rebuild kits for it. The old style (one piece) looks cone shaped and the seal retainers and the piston are one piece. The new style (3 piece) has 2 large washers as retainers and the piston is like a large cast iron washer with steps on the sides for your seals.

Thanks Mike!!!! I went back to my dealer, he was able to order up the parts for my B cylinder ( about $70) but he used the A manual. I think I will put an add in the classified adds anyway, I could use those 2 stop pins rather than using bolts. I saw one (that I think said could use rebuilding )for sale on ebay too. Again thanks!!!!!
