Welding a cracked Moldboard

One of the moldboards on my Case Mobel B plow is cracked about 3" from the rear tail edge. It had the flat steel extensions bolted on to the moldboard and it must have hit something at some point. Anyway, I have seen plows welded in that area before, but I have never tried it. Anyone have any success welding on the moldboard? I am going to give it a try as I'll probably never find another one. I am not sure exactly what the material it is made of, but it definately has a grainy texture to the metal.
Thanks

Like old says, they can certainly be welded. Follow the advice about grinding-even if you don't weld a plate behind, it works to clamp one behind to get a solid weld in the v. After all, you don't want to get less than full strength- it broke while at full strength. I've also used a wire feed to weld them, with good results. Good prep is the majority of a good weld.

Thanks for the info. What do they bolt those strips of metal on the edge of the moldboard for anyway? Seems like the 2 holes you need to mount them always weaken the moldboard at that point.

The extensions are called 'cover boards'. They help to finish turning the furrow over when plowing sod. Oftentimes the sod will flip back behind the bottom, and it looks like you didn't plow the land. Tough to work up with a disk if too much flops back. Unnecessary on non-sod fields.

Yes I have welded them before, make sure to grind a V in the crack and then use Ni rod to weld it back up. If possiable grind a V in the back side also and weld it on the back, and you also might add a fish plate on the back for extra strengh
