what is a good john deere 1240 4 row, plateless worth around wisconsin. are they a good planter or would something else with comparable age be better.thanks

Jeff, If you buy from a dealer they still want alot for the 1240. check the want ads. A 1240 plate planter was a better planter than the plateless.They both only sell for a few hundred.I owned a 494, 495a, 1240plateless ,1240 plate, and now a 7000 that has only planted 500 acres. on small acres and using bagged fert. buy a good 1240 and save some moeny. I really like my 7000 compared to the 1240 but have 10 times invested into it compared to the 1240, and you dont need to be 7 foot tall to fill the fert. boxes. Bill

Similar in technology to the 494A, but with a plateless unit. 7000 plateless was a big improvement- set the standard for planter technology ever since. Don't need a ladder to check the boxes- just lower the hydraulics. But your question was about the 1240- still a good planter for smaller acreage for fewer bucks- tech level is pre 1974, biggest advance since is depth control by the 7000- at the point of planting, rather than 2-3 feet behind the opener.

If you don't need a lader to get to the boxes then why have I seen on the dealers showroom floor new planters with a attached lader to a attached walk platforn next to the fertilizer boxes?

That must be the newer 1700 series (or whatever number they gave them) planters, not the 7000 series.

I had a 494A plate planter! It broke down much less often than my 7000 6-30" although I am not sure that is normal! they are alot cheaper to buy than a 7000 too!

Go with the JD 7000 series. The series that you mentioned in my area are lucky to bring $50.00

The 1240 was one of the best of it's time. I payed $300 for my 1240 some years ago. A dealer wanted $500 for one that was not as nice. I'm south of Green Bay Wi.
