Building a fence sprayer?

I run a two strand electric fence around about 10 acres, and it works real good except for vegetation growing up to the fence in the summer. Currently, to keep the grass under the fence down, I walk around the fence with a hand held sprayer and make lots of trips back and forth to refill.

What I'd like to do is use a 55 gallon drum of a three point setup to run an electric pump with a tractor and not have all the trips. Other than the pump, hose to a boom or spray wand, the nozzles, maybe a strainer- to keep junk out of the nozzles. What else do I need? Do I need to run a pressure gauge? Should I also use tip or nozzle strainers? How about ball valves to shut it off or just kill the switch? I want to put something together that works fairly well but I don't have much experience with spraying fields and such. I figured for all the more I'll use it it's not worth several hundreds for a commercial unit. Any ideas and hints would be appreciated.

i use a 50 gallon poly tank, taken off an old yard sprayer, put it on a frame, mounted an electric pump (12-volt) on it, i hook aligator clips to my battery and drive my pickup along the fence, holding the wand out the window, it have a toggle on/off switch for the pump, work really well, also i put about 50 ft of hose on it, so i could walk out away and spray my culvert areas and around machinery/buildings and bins

A spraying system needs a pump, a pressure gauge, an adjusting valve, and a delivery system (nozzle). You also need to monitor your ground speed in order to deliver a uniform amount of herbicide. Then you can calibrate, and readjust, to always deliver the same amount of herbicide. Whether your pump is electric, pto, or hydraulic- it will deliver a given amount beyond what you need for agitation, and that needs to be controlled by the adjusting valve. Ground speed needs to be constant in order to maintain a uniform delivery to the nozzle(s). Normally a system includes a screen on the main line, and a small screen on each nozzle to maintain constant flow. Try a search for basic system configuration on something like sprayingsystems.com- major provider of components for farm sprayers. Really not too complicated- but some basics need to be adhered to in order to come up with a home made system for responsible use of herbicides. Most important thing is to be able to determine how much product is being delivered in a given area, so mixes are made up accordingly.

here in california, tree farmers use exactly what your talking about to spray roundup and other chemicals on the borders to keep down weeds the sprayer and nozzles paul has will do fine and if you keep dirt or other contaminants out screens are all you need. The first units we used here 15 years ago were just automotive electic fuel pumps mounted to a 100 gallon plastic barrel straped to a small garden trailer with a 12 volt battery and a boom to spray 2 borders at same time pulled behind four wheeler.
may sound crude to you but the guy who did this first got rich building these for his neighbors.
think about it and you can probably build your own real cheap and do a great job at the same time. good luck

i'm in the process of building a small boom sprayer with a 55 gallon drum. already had a home made boom sprayer for a 15 gallon tank, but i spend more time filling it than i do spraying with it. the fan nozzles for the boom each have a little mesh strainer to keep the junk out of the nozzles, these are tee-jet nozzles.

i didn't use a pressure guage. the shurflo pumps are designed to run at a constant pressure and constant gpm rate. you just buy a particular pump with the pressure and flow rate that you need. mine's 45 psi and 2.8 gpm. i bought it on ebay for about $40.

i just use a kill switch to turn it off, a ball valve is just another complication.

what are you using for a herbicide? roundup? it kills existing vegetation but won't prevent new growth. i have some home made chairs i made from a tree trunk, i hunt from these chairs. i had the problem of weeds and tall grasses popping up around the chairs. mowing, weedeating, etc was just a hastle. roundup killed the weeds but they grew back. now i use pramitol. one application will last for 12 months. instead of spending the time and money making the sprayer, try using pramitol once a year. you still have to spray it by hand, but you only have to do it once a year.
