JD model W manure spreader modified for compost

Has anyone tried this ?

I need to modify my JD model W spreader for compost. Right now the compost is too crumbly to make it to the back beater so it just drops off the end. Under the spreader it comes off at a rate of about 32T / acre. Next to the spreader, there isn't any.

A lime spreader attachment looks like it just throws it straight back, so I am planning to use the right angle drives off of a wrecked 494 planter to throw the compost to the side.

Any better ideas ?

Maybe put a slop pan from the end of the chain under beaters? Modern 1 and 2 beater speaders from New Idea, New Holland, H&S, etc, have these available. I'm not sure if it would work with the 2-beater+widespread auger design on the W, though.
